Spike Lee is the eldest of 4 children born to Jacqueline Carroll (nee Shelton) & her spouse William James Edward Lee III in Atlanta, the capital city of Georgia, United States. As a child, Spike with his family shifted to Brooklyn, in New York. He was nicknamed “Spike” by his mother during his early age. Little Spike initially studied at the John Dewey High School, Brooklyn & then attended the historically black college, Morehouse College. Later Spike went to the Clark Atlanta University & attended the classes of film courses following his Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication via Morehouse. Spike soon joined the Tisch School of Arts at New York University & achieved a Master of Fine Arts degree majoring in Television & Films. On 2nd October, 1993, at age 36 Spike tied knot with Tonya Lewis, together with whom he welcomed his first child, a baby girl named Satchel Lee in December of 1994. The duo also has a son named Jackson Lee, who was born in the year 1997.

Spike Lee’s career in the entertainment industry started during his college days, when he made his foremost movie “Last Hustle in Brooklyn”. “Joe’s Bed- Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads”, his thesis film, was the initial student movie to be presented in the New Directors New Films Festival at Lincoln Center. In 1985, Spike shot his first featured movie “She’s Gotta Have It”, within 2 weeks with a total budget of 175, 000 U.S. dollar. The movie was launched the next year grossing over 7 million dollar on the U. S. box-office. Since then, this winning personality, has come out with his numerous hit movies, counting Do the Right Things (1989), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Inside Man (2006), with many more.

Recognized for his movies with the maximum involvement of African- American themes & African Americans performers, Spike Lee often casts the endowed stars like Michael Imperioli & Denzel Washington. He is an admirer of Michael Moore’s movies, who calls himself to be an avid fan of New York Knicks, an American basketball team, the New York Yankees, U.S. baseball team & Arsenal, the British football team.
